"There has to be some reason we've grown so much from me lying on my back fixing cars in a storage shed," he said.
The new Layton shop, located at 1365 North Main, will, like the original (335 South Frontage Road in Centerville), will perform all kinds of mechanical and electrical auto repairs. While billed as "import" specialists, it will work on all makes and models.
"We are your dealer alternative for service and repair, and extended warranty work," said Bell. "We have won awards as the best equipped shop in Utah and are AAA approved.
"All our technicians are ASE Master Certified," he said, "and each undergoes at least 40 hours of training a year to keep up with the changing technology of the auto industry. When it comes to really fixing cars, we're not just part hangers."
Bell's recipe for success, he asserted, is to provide services that others don't offer. The process begins with a "thorough diagnosis" of each vehicle brought in. Once the problem is found, Dave's crew can offer options and suggestions for proper repair.
"We're like a doctor," he said. "We like to say, 'a prescription without a thorough diagnosis is malpractice.' We will always diagnose your car first and offer repair options before any work is done."
Some car owners might worry this type of care will cost more, but Bell says it often means the opposite.
"Why rebuild an engine when all you need is to repair it?" he said. "In the long run we can save you money."
Along with providing well trained technicians -- some of whom have been with the shop for 10 years or more -- and offering complete auto diagnostics, Dave's Auto Care Center is equipped with all the latest tools of the trade, including a full machine shop.
"Years ago, I offered $1,000 to any shop in the state better equipped than ours," said Bell. "I still have that $1,000."
Ultimately,, the key success, he believes, is to be willing to invest in your business -- your facilities and your people.
"We're in this for the long haul," said Bell. "My sons will take this over some day."
