Carl Alfred Nelson, Capt, USN, ret, 87, of Chula Vista CA passed away Feb. 3, 2018 from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. Carl enlisted in the US Navy and then attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. Following graduation in 1956, Carl married Barbara Long; Barb died in 2004.
Carl spent over 33 years in the Navy, including four tours of duty during the Vietnam War, but enjoying most his command of three ships. His war decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with combat V, two Air Medals, the Combat Action Medal, and 14 others,
Following retirement, Carl earned a doctorate in business administration and taught international business at various colleges and universities in the San Diego area. His prep notes from teaching became his first five books on international trade. Writing fiction was more fun, and he published a series of five novels which roughly followed his Navy career. Carl wrote poetry, short stories, and professional articles, a play, a musical, and two memoirs.
In 1981 Carl, as captain of the USS Worden in the South China Sea, rescued 44 Vietnamese ‘boat people’ who were facing certain death. Fifteen years later they located him, have treated him as their honored parent, and even named a ‘grandchild’ after him: Carli Grace.
In 2006 Carl married Dolores Hansen of Centerville and they enjoyed a wonderful life in California. Carl and Dolores spent 13 years traveling the world, playing golf, and fly fishing.
Carl leaves behind his wife Dolores, three daughters, six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and Dolores’s extended family.
