Bountiful High’s Fools for Jazz set for April 27

BOUNTIFUL—It’s a chance to get your toes tapping.

The Bountiful High Jazz Band is bringing the rhythm with their upcoming “Fools for Jazz” event, set for April 27 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Bountiful High old gym. The evening will feature a night of Glen Miller-style jazz classics, set in a transformed swing-era dance hall complete with a bandstand.

“It’s a wonderful, inspiring evening,” said David Hall, the chairman for the organizing committee. “Many people who come to this say they had no idea it was this big.”

The jazz band, along with two Jr. high bands, spend the evening playing popular jazz numbers designed to be danced to. To encourage people to do just that, there’s also a dance floor available that gets a lot of use from guests throughout the event. Though there will be a dance contest everyone is welcome to take part in, for most of the night the dance floor is open for anyone wanting to cut a rug.

“It’s packed almost the whole night through,” said Hall. “Everyone from young children all the way up through grandparents and great grandparents are out there.”

A swing-era costume contest will also be held during the event. As in previous years, there will be a full dinner with several different dessert and drink options will be available for purchase. There will also be individual food items available for sale, such as pizza and popcorn.

“We’ve gone all out the last few years,” he said.

The event has been a BHS Jazz Band tradition for more than a decade, and Hall said it’s become a tradition for many others as well.

“Former students and dancing couples come back from year to year long after they have graduated, some traveling long distances, to be part of the evening’s events,” he said. “It has provided some wonderful memories for many students.”

The jazz band also hosts a special afternoon event for seniors, set the same day from 3-4 p.m. The senior’s event is free, and light refreshments will be served. The event, which draws many people from local senior centers, was introduced as part of Fools for Jazz a few years ago.

“We wanted to bring something of benefit to the senior community, and try to reach out to them,” he said.

Whether it’s the afternoon or evening event, however, Hall said that the students are all excited to help make it happen.

“It’s the highlight of the year for them,” he said. “They get to perform and be onstage, and it’s their only chance all year to perform for a dancing audience.”

Tickets to the evening Fools for Jazz event are $4 in advance, and can be purchased from either band members or the Bountiful High office. They can also be purchased at the door for $5 per person or $20 for a family pass.

Bountiful High is located at 695 S. Orchard Drive in Bountiful. For the senior event, please enter the old gym through the east doors between the old and new gyms.
