Whether you ride for competition or just for fun, Cycle Therapy in downtown Rome is your one-stop-shop for bikes, accessories, repairs and tips.
Owner Trey Smith is a mechanical engineer and avid cyclist who knows area trails and bikeways like the back of his hand. Rider-education is a special focus for his wife, Julie.
Together, the two have attracted a like-minded group of employees who truly enjoy tailoring equipment to suit a customer’s dreams. “The whole thing can be overwhelming, but we want to make it as easy as possible to ride,” Julie says.
From mountain biking or city commuting to Cyclocross racing or trundling around with the new baby, the Cycle Therapy crew can recommend set-ups for every lifestyle.
The Broad Street shop’s premier brands — Cannondale, Scott, Giant and Yeti, to name a few — are well-known to serious riders, and a lot of their business comes from word-of-mouth.
But cycling also is a family activity for the Smiths and they love to encourage the shared experience with a full range of price points.
“It’s such a great thing to see kids getting their first bike,” Julie says. “The proper fit is key. That really plays into their comfort-level and ability.”
The store offers a wide selection of helmets in various sizes and styles, from flashy Lazer brands to the more utilitarian SixSixOne.
Then there are the gloves, socks, hydration and nutrition kits, heartrate monitors and clothing that can take the sport to a whole new level.
“A lot of the clothing can double as running jerseys as well,” Julie says. “And even if you’re more of a recreational rider than a hardcore one, the padded shorts are nice to have.”
There’s more to cycling than just equipment, though, and the Smiths ensure their customers have access to event information, bike parts and expert repair service.
“We have a great team that can work on any type of bike, whether you’ve bought it here or not,” Julie says.
Trey likes to offer his customers entrées into the biking community — for the fun, sport and health of it.
“There are mental benefits to just being outside,” he says. “I’ll have a not-so-great day, and Julie will tell me to go get on my bike and get it all worked out. That’s how we came up with (the name) Cycle Therapy.”
Trey’s a dedicated promoter of events as diverse as the Georgia Cup, Cartersville Century Ride, outings sponsored by the Coosa Valley Cycling Association, the annual Snake Gap Trail time trials for mountain bikers and the Rome Winter Cyclocross Series at Lock & Dam Park.
He also actively supports several adult and youth triathlon charity fundraisers and is on a personal quest to connect Floyd County to the fabled Silver Comet Trail.
The 96-mile route from Smyrna to Anniston, Ala. is the product of an Atlanta-based nonprofit, the PATH Foundation.
“If we can get to the Floyd County line, PATH Foundation has sort of made a commitment that they would take care of the expense to come off the Silver Comet and meet us at the county line,” he says.
