BOUNTIFUL – Imagination doesn’t worry about little things like stage size or the laws of physics.
That’s the pleasure and challenge of “The Drowsy Chaperone,” coming to the Bountiful High stage Jan. 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17-19 at 7 p.m. The show, which exists entirely in the imagination of one of the main characters, transforms an apartment into any number of fantasy situations.
“The dance numbers are intricate, the costumes are numerous and extravagant, the scenery and props are expansive,” said director Angela Brown. “But it’s a wonderful musical, and truly an escape for the audience.”
The Tony Award-winning play starts with the main character listening to a record of his favorite 1920s musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone.” The supposed musical, which doesn’t really exist, is a complicated story of romance, gangsters, and misunderstandings. As the main character listens, scenes from the musical pop up around him.
“Each character has great messages to share with the audience,” Brown said. “Themes include not giving up on your dreams, life involves sacrifice, share love with those around you, and life can get difficult but as long as we have a glimpse of hope we can go on.”
There are also plenty of laughs in the musical, which affectionately skewers classic musical clichés. Tricks such as pausing the action to comment add to the humor.
“The students have learned to love the show,” said Brown. “They continue to laugh at all the funny parts, even though they’ve seen them a million times.”
