NORTH SALT LAKE — Those familiar with “A Christmas Carol,” will immediately recognize “The Gospel According to Scrooge.” “It's very similar to Dickens' story. Some of the lines are the same,” said the Rev. Ron Keller who stars as the stingy old businessman Ebeneezer Scrooge in Abundant Life Assembly of God’s production of the musical. Abundant Life is offering the play for the fourth year, Dec. 7-9 and 14 -16 at the church, located at 410 N. Main in North Salt Lake. The play begins at 7 p.m. on Fridays and 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $4, or $4.50 if purchased online. All proceeds will go to New Hope House, a home for at-risk teen girls run by the Christian Teen Challenge program in Tooele. The facility helps girls between the ages of 12 and 17 with issues such as drug addiction, criminal behavior and destructive life behavior, Keller said. At New Hope House, the teens receive schooling, counseling and medical attention to give them a new chance at life. Some of the girls are expected to attend the play. The play and New Hope House, “kind of go together,” Keller said, in that they both offer a new beginning. The play differs from the standard telling of “A Christmas Carol,” in that instead of “ghosts,” angels show Scrooge his past, present and future, and at the end, Scrooge comes to accept Jesus as his savior. “Like the Christmas Carol, it's about getting another chance,” Keller said. For the sake of time and economy of sets, Bob Cratchit becomes Scrooge's nephew in “The Gospel According to Scrooge.” “He speaks to his uncle about making changes,” Keller said The Rev. Alex Lucero, senior pastor at Abundant Life, plays the Angel of Christmas Present. A spontaneous man, Lucero has been known to ad-lib a little, throwing Keller off, he said. The play runs for 90 minutes and families are invited to attend together. “We'd love to have the kids come,” Keller said. mwilliams@davisclipper.com
