BOUNTIFUL – Mike Johnson personally saw to it that the Viewmont Vikings soccer team advanced to Tuesday’s 5A semi-finals.
Johnson scored both of Viewmont’s goals Friday afternoon against Copper Hills, and the Vikings won the match 2-1 to move onto Tuesday’s semi-final match with Riverton.
“We know Copper Hills; they’re a good team and they played great,” said Vikings coach Dave Wigham. “This is a great win for us.”
Copper Hills was the aggressor in the beginning of the match, leading to an eventual 1-0 lead after Luis Vargas found the back of the net in the 11th minute.
Viewmont tied the match 10 minutes later when Johnson scored the first of his two goals, and the two teams battled to a halftime draw.
“We had to play the ball quicker,” Wigham said. “They had us outnumbered by playing three (defensemen) in the back, so that gave them an extra man at midfield. I told our midfielders they had to play quicker and I told our guys in the back that (Copper Hills) was pushing up the back line, so our fullback started playing up and over them. That’s what helped us get the winning goal.”
Copper Hills had the initial chance to take the lead in the 65th minute, but Porter May made a pair of key stops to keep the match tied.
Six minutes later, Johnson scored his second and final goal of the game, and the Vikings defense held off a late Grizzlies attack to advance to the semi-finals.
“He’s a big time player,” Wigham said of Johnson. “People concentrate on Luke (Cawley) so much, they don’t realize that Mike is our leading scorer.”
Johnson scored his 15th and 16th goal of the season in the game.
The Vikings will face Riverton, which beat Alta 2-0 the same day, Tuesday at Woods Cross High School. Game time is 4:15 p.m.
