TAYLORSVILLE – The Davis Lady Darts could hardly miss a shot in its opening round playoff game against Lone Peak Tuesday night at Salt Lake Community College.

As a result, three players for Davis scored in double figures to lead the team to a 69-55 victory over the Lady Knights.

“You got kids that are going to score in double figures, so who are you going to key on?” said Davis coach Anne Jones. “I thought they did a really nice job out there talking to each other, supporting each other, and the kids that came off the bench were huge.”

Davis’s defense held the typically high-scoring Knights to 24 points in the first half, and was able to capitalize on missed shots by grabbing offensive rebounds and scoring quickly on turnovers.

The result was an 18-point halftime lead, led by Sarah Beecher’s seven points and McKenzie Day’s five points.

Day was also very difficult to shoot around when she played defense, swatting away four shots and grabbing three rebounds in the first half.

“Lone Peak is a very solid team, and they’ve got one of the best players in the state,” said Jones. “I just thought we did a really nice job. We had a lot of seniors on this team last year, and we’re a really young team this year, but they did an awesome job on defense.”

The dominance continued when the second half started as the Lady Darts’ lead grew from 18 to 24 points. Day, Beecher, and Kayley Neilson did the majority of the scoring in the third quarter, and bench player Malia Tupuola kept the stingy Davis defense going by nabbing away rebounds on both ends of the floor.

Lone Peak was able to slip through the Darts’ defense in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 points; however, Davis countered with 12 points and maintained its defensive stand to move into the quarterfinal round Thursday.

“I thought we did a really good job of staying patient but being aggressive,” said Jones. “There’s kind of that fine line, but they’ve grown up a lot from Game 1 until now. We’ll still need to fix a few things, but we’ll come out, play hard and see what happens.”

Neilson led the Darts in scoring with 14 points. Day and Beecher each finished with 13 points in the win. The Lady Darts will face Brighton Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
