LAYTON - The government may be shut down, but neighborhood spirit is still in full force.

Cristen Smith, known online as “The Pear Lady,” and her sister Kaitlyn Ford will be at Layton Park Oct. 5 at 4:30 p.m. to distribute formula, food and other goods to mothers affected by the shutdown of the government’s Women, Infants and Children program (WIC). They are also accepting donations of anything that a mother, child or family might need.

“This is a movement we started to help the moms, kids, and families in need,” reads the project’s Facebook page,

Though Layton won’t allow homemade food, volunteers will be on hand to accept donations of milk, formula, baby food, fruits and vegetables, canned food, clothing, diapers, blankets and more. Currently, they are also looking for tables to place the goods on (the tables will be returned) and volunteers to help organize and distribute.

For more information or to help, contact the group through their Facebook page.
