CENTERVILLE — A Farmington man was arrested after he allegedly hid in an apartment following a shoplifting incident at the Centerville Walmart.

Justin R. Anderson, 30, was booked into the Davis County Jail on charges of felony retail theft, evading a police officer, trespassing and possession of burglary tools following Tuesday's incident.

Police received a report of a shoplifting in progress at the store. The first arriving officer spotted Anderson behind the store with a backpack, Assistant Centerville Police Chief Paul Child said in a press release. Anderson initially hid behind a semi-trailer, but was confronted by the officer and commanded to stop.

Anderson allegedly ran into a unit of the Cedar Springs apartment complex, starting the occupants, Child said. A foot chase ensued.

The 77-year-old woman who lives in the unit fled outside, leaving her daughter and granddaughter inside with the suspect, Child said. The woman who fled contacted the pursuing officer and informed him of the suspect's location.

Anderson was taken into custody in an upstairs bedroom without incident.

The items stolen from the store and a backpack were recovered.
