BOUNTIFUL — The campaigns between Davis County Commissioner John Petroff and his Democratic opponent Steve Andersen are heating up.

The two men have debated publicly around the county this week, broaching topics such as county debt and spending. Andersen has criticized county commissioner’s use of bonding to fund new buildings and to repair flood infrastructure throughout his campaign and in recent debates.

Petroff has countered, saying that interest rates on the debt were historically inexpensive and that debt spreads the burden of costs throughout the time the facilities will be in operation. That creates more fairness, instead of requiring current taxpayers to fund the entire cost, he said.

The candidates have also discussed commissioner pay. Andersen has pledged to forego the salary and benefits if elected, while Petroff has said the pay is fair for a professional of the caliber needed for the position.
