BOUNTIFUL — The 11th annual Camp Speed is fast approaching, and promises to be another successful and popular training event for youth and high school athletes.

It starts on June 11 and running to July 6, the camp is designed to help athletes of all ages and sizes with a multitude of speed and power drills that help them improve on their power, speed and footwork.

Bob Larsen, a physical therapist, started the camp in 2003 after attending a course in Arizona and speaking with a director at Athlete’s Performance, a world-renowned training facility.

“We decided it would be a great to offer to athletes in Davis County,” said Larsen in an email. “We’ve trained over 600 athletes in this program and they’ve all seen some pretty significant results.”

The athletes show their improvements by running speed drills such as the 40-yard dash, shuttle run and vertical jump, among other speed and power-related drills used in sporting combines.

Athletes will get a pre- and post-testing of their drills, and their parents will get reports.

“Many athletes have shaved off over one half of a second on their 40 times,” said Larsen, who is a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist. “We have had many of our summer camp participants achieved All-State and All-Region honors in football, baseball, soccer and basketball. We’ve also had many of the same athletes play at the collegiate level.”

Larsen said the camp also focuses on “core stabilization,” and that “safety and proper technique are emphasized throughout.”

Registration is ongoing. The cost is $170 per person and includes three days of training (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) for four weeks, totaling 12 sessions.

The camp is being held at Millcreek Junior High School, located at 245 E. 1000 South in Bountiful It is open to boys and girls ages eight to 18.
