BOUNTIFUL – Take a musical blast to the past.

Bountiful High Drama Department’s production of “Bye-Bye Birdie” will hit the stage Oct. 7-12 and 14-15 at 7 p.m. in the BHS auditorium. The 1950s’s musical follows a rock-n-roll singer, Conrad Birdie, who comes to town as part of a publicity stunt to give a girl one last kiss before he leaves for the army.

“It’s a classic,” said Director Angela Brown, who added that this is the first time Bountiful High had ever presented the show as the school musical. “It has a fun story, great songs, and is highly entertaining.”

Though many parents and relatives of the students only knew the show through the 1963 movie or the 1995 TV movie, Brown said that she considers the stage version to be superior to both.

“I believe it outshines Hollywood’s efforts,” she said. “The students seem to love this show now. They enjoy the jokes, dances and characters.”

Through the relatively short eight weeks they had for rehearsals, the teens also got a bit of a history lesson.

“What is funny is my students are learning about the 50’s-60’s and they are in awe of how people lived,” she said. “They can’t imagine doing without today’s conveniences.”

Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door, with a $25 family pass also available. Advance tickets can be purchased at the BHS main office, Top Hat Video & DVD and Paisley Skye in Bountiful.
