BOUNTIFUL — This past weekend, Bountiful High School’s Jazz band attended the state high school jazz festival, bringing home its highest score in some years.

The festival includes several categories. For the BHS jazz band, three superior ratings for performance were given. The band also received a superior rating on sight reading. The band members and parents give much of the credit to director Danny Turnbloom.

“It’s unbelievable what they could play a score as well as they did, sight unseen,” said Stan Haacke, a parent involved with band communication.

To sight read a piece, the band is give music they open for the first time when directed to by a judge. Then a two-minute clock starts, and the band quickly walks through the music, with each player fingering his/her own part. They spend a few seconds individually playing their parts, then the band is required to play the piece together for the first time.

“Each member has to utilize the years of musical preparation that they have invested to hold up their part of the band,” said Haacke.

A concert for the school was scheduled for Wednesday evening. The band begins its concerts promptly at 7 p.m.

The band will also be hosting its annual BHS Band Booster Board on Friday, April 30 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The event is geared toward helping to raise funds for the students.
