BOUNTIFUL — A 6-year-old boy taken from a local elementary school by his noncustodial mother Wednesday was found safe in Murray Thursday morning.
Riley James Martin was found at 9:14 a.m. Thursday and is now in child protective custody, said Bountiful Police Lt. Gary Koehn. The child is reportedly fine.
Police say Heather Lee Martin entered her son's school Wednesday afternoon, and removed Riley James Martin. The boy is described as autistic with communication challenges.
His mother had a history of drug abuse, police said.
The school did nothing wrong because Heather Martin is listed as a custodial parent, Koehn said. However, the state Division of Child and Family Services is conducting an investigation and the boy has been is being cared for by protective services.
The Davis County Attorney's Office is screening possible charges.
