SUNSET — A 42-year-old man was shot in the abdomen by a Sunset police officer about 1:30 a.m. on Monday.

Officers received a hang-up call at 1:19 a.m. Sunset Police Chief Ken Eborn said the officer was dispatched to a home near 1100 North and 300 West. There, he saw a man through a glass door holding a handgun.

Eborn said the officer ordered the man to put the gun down several times, but the man refused. Instead, he shot into a wall. Eborn said the officer again ordered the man to drop the gun, but the man refused and turned the gun towards the officer. The officer then shot three times, hitting the man in the stomach.

He was taken to Ogden Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. He was reportedly alert when he was taken to the hospital.

Police are not releasing the names of either the man who was shot or the officer. The officer is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation which will be conducted by the Critical Incident Team, a team of law enforcement officers from throughout the county.
