LAYTON – Police say the suspect in a Layton stabbing homicide has been arrested in Tooele County.

According to a release from Layton Police, Joe Castillo was arrested at a Lake Point Del Taco restaurant late Tuesday morning.

Castillo is accused of stabbing and killing his estranged wife Kaylynn Spackman at her home late Sunday night.

According to police, Castillo was spotted at the Del Taco by a local law enforcement officer just before noon on Tuesday. He was approached and apprehended without incident shortly after.

Castillo was transported back to Layton for questioning and expected to be booked into Davis County Jail later.

According to Layton Police, 45-year-old Joseph Castillo got into an argument at the home of his estranged wife, 36-year-old Kay Lynn Spackman late Sunday night.

Police told the Clipper that Castillo and Spackman had recently separated, and that Castillo had been issued a restraining order, a result of a domestic disturbance reported at the home located at 3200 W. 1025 North in April.

Police say during the Sunday night argument, police say Spackman was stabbed, and Castillo left on foot.

Spackman was transported to Davis Hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to police.

Police say Castillo and Spackman were married for over 20 years.

The couple’s 17-year-old son was a witness to part of the altercation that led to the stabbing and that the couple’s 8 and 4 year-old daughters were also inside the home when the stabbing occurred, but did not witness the crime, according to police.

Layton Police Lt. Jason Hinojosa said Castillo was bong processed for evidence by investigators prior to being booked into the Davis County Jail, and that prosecutors were screening first-degree homicide charges against him.
