FARMINGTON — Davis County sheriff's investigators are checking into a case of telephone harassment that may be related to an attempt at identity theft.

"There's tons of people who are complaining on the Internet about receiving these calls," said Davis County Sheriff's Sgt, Susan Poulsen

The sheriff's office heard from a woman who had received a call from an incomplete number that showed up as 1002 on her caller ID. The victim said she had been receiving multiple calls a day for a couple of weeks from the number.

A male caller said he had information pertaining to school and asked the victim for personal information, Poulsen said. When she didn't provide the information, the caller became hostile and made profane remarks. He knew her name, phone number and email address, that the victim said she hadn't provided to the caller.

Some of the victims who complained on the Internet said they'd been getting the calls for weeks, months, even as long as a year. "It seems to be harassment, but it appears they are trolling for information, possibly for identity theft," Poulsen said.

Anyone receiving calls from the incomplete number 1002 shouldn't answer the phone, Poulsen said. If the calls continue or increase, victims may want to change their telephone number.
