BOUNTIFUL — For the past few weeks, it’s been an adventure to visit the Smith’s Food & Drug at 2399 S. Main Street in Bountiful.

Tthe store has been undergoing a refresh that will cost about $1.5 million, said Marsha Gilford, vice president of public affairs for Smith’s Food & Drug.

Merchandise has been shifted in many instances, but the store encourages staffers to help customers track down the new locations.

That falls in line with employee T-shirts that are emblazoned with the words, “Did we make it right?,” reflecting the ability of each store associate to do what’s needed to make a customer happy, Gilford said.

“Once I’ve learned where everything is,” longtime shopper George Kennedy said he’ll be happy.

“We’re giving the store a complete face lift,” she said. “It’s going to be repainted in what we call the Bountiful decor, with very rich earth tones, with a very upscale feeling to the colors, very contemporary.”

Tile floor and new fixtures will be installed in what is one of the oldest stores in the multi-state chain that is a division of food retailer Kroger Company.

On the exterior, shingles will be removed, Gilford said.

Due to property constraints, the store’s footprint won’t be enlarged. However, changes include a reconfiguration of the area around the pharmacy to include more shelving.

“We think this is a good neighborhood store so we’re making the investment to bring the best shopping experience,” Gilford said.

Store Director Justin Mitchell said no firm completion date has been set. However, he’s looking at mid to late October.              No change in employment levels is planned, Gilford said.

Smith’s has been remodeling many of its stores in the last few years, including the Smith’s Marketplace in Bountiful. It  received a substantial facelift in mid-2010.
