SALT LAKE CITY — State Tax Commissioner Marc B. Johnson will retire at the end of the year after 12 years of service.
Johnson, a Bountiful resident, completed three terms on the four-member commission.
In addition to fulfilling his day-to-day responsibilities of hearing and ruling on a wide range of tax cases, Johnson was instrumental in the revision and rewriting of the administrative rule that addresses the valuation of centrally assessed properties such as mines, railroads, utilities and telecommunications.
He also supervised the Economic and Statistical unit and the issuance of private letter rulings.
“Marc is a recognized expert in Utah tax laws,” said Tax Commission Chair R. Bruce Johnson. “He has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that those laws are fairly administered. His expertise, dedication and commitment to the public will be sorely missed.”
“Marc Johnson has done an excellent job in this capacity,” said Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert.
“I appreciate his years of dedicated service.”
Herbert will appoint a new commissioner, who then must be confirmed by the Utah State Senate.
The State Constitution requires that no more than two people from the same political party serve as commissioners.
Johnson is not affiliated with a political party.
