HANOVER, N.H.—The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory recently welcomed Dr. Michael Muhlestein to their technical staff.

Muhlestein joined CRREL’s Signature Physics Branch as a research physical scientist. His research interests include physical acoustics, nonlinear sound propagation, acoustic metamaterials, effective material property estimation, theoretical acoustics and analytical methods.

Muhlestein is a native of Bountiful, Utah, and current resident of Orford, New Hampshire. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s in physics from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and completed a two-year church mission in Japan.

CRREL SPB’s mission is to conduct research and develop decision-making and prediction products focused on the sensor-target interaction and influence of terrain and weather environment on signal propagation. SPB’s technical staff members conduct fundamental research to increase knowledge and understanding of external perturbations to electromagnetic, acoustic, and seismic wave propagation and signatures in support of the military warfighter, as well as civilian complex geometry and geology.

The Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, New Hampshire, is an integral component of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.

Headquartered in Vicksburg, Miss., ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with more than 2,100 employees, $1 billion in facilities and an annual research program exceeding $1 billion. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation.
