MAGNA – The Bountiful Braves finished second behind Clearfield by less than 10 points in last weekend’s Region 6 wrestling championships.
Woods Cross, which scored 237 points, finished third overall and nine points ahead of fourth-place Highland.
Clearfield wins Region 6 wrestling crown, Bountiful second
The Clearfield Falcons wrestling team took home a third straight Region 6 title last weekend, besting the Bountiful Braves by 9.5 points and totaling 332.5 points for the tournament.
The Braves, who finished second, scored 322 points for a solid second place finish, and Woods Cross placed third with a team score of 237 points.
For the Braves, six wrestlers made the finals of their respective weight classes, with five of them claiming individual titles.
Among the individual champions were Zach Walker (120 pounds), Conner Arvidson (132 pounds), Brooks Fletcher (138 pounds), Sergio Rodriguez (160 pounds) and Lee Freestone (285 pounds).
Lamar Gimmeson made it to the finals of the 145 pound weight class, but lost by default to Ben Bolingbroke of Clearfield.
For Woods Cross, the Wildcats had three wrestlers make the finals of their weight classes.
Ben Harden, wrestling at 113 pounds, was the only grappler to win his weight class after beating Tyson Norton of Kearns.
Davis Halls, wrestling at 138 pounds, lost to Bountiful’s Brooks Fletcher to finish second.
Sam Cottam, wrestling at 220 pounds, also finished second after dropping the championship match to Colton Grossaint of Kearns.
Clearfield had four individual champions and three others finish in second place.
Logan Swallow swept through his weight class to win the 106-pound bracket, and Daxton Arnold won the 126 pound bracket after beating Cyprus’s Brody Zlemski, 2-1.
Kolton Burgess won the 170 pound weight class with a pin over Sherwin Lavaka of Kearns to round out the individual champions.
Quade Dashnew (160 pounds) and Haden Phillips (182 pounds) each placed second in their respective weight classes.
The Viewmont Vikings and Davis Darts will be attempting to send as many wrestlers to next week’s State 5A Tournament as they continue to battle through the qualifier tournament Thursday.
Both Bountiful and Woods Cross will have two weeks to prepare for the 4A State tournament.
The 4A and 5A tournament will be held at the Maverik Center this season.
