A few days later, she saw a sign for the Bountiful Community Food Pantry and knew that’s where she wanted to volunteer.
“After school, I’d come home and wouldn’t do anything,” White said. “I wanted to do something with a purpose.”
White just finished ninth grade at Legacy Preparatory Academy and will begin 10th grade at Viewmont High School this fall.
At the pantry, she helps stock shelves after closing to prepare for the next day’s clients.
White is happy the pantry is available.
“If I were in a position of needing help, it’s nice to know there’s a place people are there to help out,” she said.
While White began volunteering at the pantry in December, she’s now part of the Pantry Teens program offered at the food bank, 150 N. 480 East, in Bountiful.
Pantry Teens is open to 14-18 year olds.
Through the program, teens may become involved in many different areas of the pantry, doing tasks as varied as stocking shelves, greeting clients, sorting food, picking up donations from grocery stores and reading to clients’ children while their parents are receiving food.
A poster distributed throughout south Davis County lets teens know about it.
