SALT LAKE CITY — Kennedy Merrick, Jenny Skedros and Tiana Dougher combined to score 52 points Tuesday night against Herriman in the opening round of the girls’ 4A state playoffs.

The trio’s scoring, combined with a solid defense, gave the Lady Braves the playoff victory over the Mustangs, 64-43.

Going with the mantra of trying to hold opponents to fewer than 40 points per game, the Joel Burton-coached Lady Braves held Herriman to 19 points in the first half.

Merrick, Skedros and others played solid defense to go along with scoring 30 first-half points.

Bountiful’s best quarter was the third, as the Lady Braves scored 19 points to extend its lead to 18 points entering the final eight minutes.

The defense allowed 12 points in both the third and fourth quarters, but combined to score 34 second half points for the easy victory.

Merrick led all scorers with 22 points, and Skedros and Dougher each scored 15 points in the win for the Lady Braves.

Bountiful will play against Sky View Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Bobcats defeated Salem Hills 64-60 in the opening round of its playoffs Tuesday night.

A win would put them in the semifinals against either Orem or Timpview Friday night at 4 p.m.

 

Lady Wildcats eliminated in play-in game 

Woods Cross had an opportunity to enter the 4A girls’ basketball playoffs with a win against Orem Saturday, but fell 42-30 to the Tigers. 

Woods Cross ended its season with six overall wins, three in Region 6 play. 

Orem later won its opening round game against Skyline, 40-3.

The Lady Wildcats will face Timpview Thursday at 2:30 p.m. 

 

Monday’s playoff scores

Davis 63, West 34

Jessica Richardson scored a game-high 27 points for the Lady Darts in Davis’ first round victory over West.

Natalie Mecham scored 10 points for Davis as well, and West’s Maddy Murphy scored 20 points in the loss. 

The Darts played against Riverton in the second round of the playoffs Wednesday night. Riverton had just beaten Brighton 54-50 two days before.

Fremont 46, Viewmont 45 (OT)

For the second time in three playoff appearances, the Lady Vikings girls’ basketball team was eliminated by Fremont, this time by a score of 46-45. Fremont and Viewmont ended regulation tied at 37, and the Silver Wolves outscored the Vikings 9-8 in the overtime period.

It was a heartbreaking upset for Viewmont.

Katie Toole led the Lady Vikings with 15 points, and Fremont’s Amanda Wayment scored 12 points. Fremont faced American Fork Wednesday.

The final score was unavailable as of press time.
