LAYTON — Billy Zumbrun of Ogden headlined an eight-bout card last Saturday when he faced “CJ” Henry Namauu for the Utah State heavyweight title at the Davis Conference Center in Layton.
Zumbrun won the bout by unanimous decision, improving his record to 27-13-1 with 16 knockouts.
Jesse West, a West Point resident, made his second overall appearance in the ring that night against Keith Busch. West won the bout by unanimous decision, notching his second win in as many fights.
However, Saturday’s nonstop action was met with heart-wrenching news Tuesday when the promoter, Tracy Spinks, died from complications he encountered in the midst of Saturday’s bouts.
Charles Presnell of CCC promotions heard the news Tuesday afternoon.
“I’m not sure of everything that happened, but I know he was taken to the hospital that night,” said Presnell. “He was released Sunday and I talked to him that day. He was a good guy.”
Spinks was a West Point resident and lead promoter in another boxing event held at the Conference Center in July. He also promoted another set of fights in March, held at the Ogden Marriott.
Presnell said he is unaware of how Spinks died, and learned of the death while traveling.
“He put all his work towards promoting these events,” he said. “I’m in shock, really.”
Other results from Saturday’s bouts were: super featherweight “Happy Gilmore” Evgeny Chuprakov beating Wilbert Mitchell (unanimous decision), welterweight Egidijus Kavaliauskas beating Jason Thompson (technical knockout), featherweight Jose Haro beating “Edde” Eduardo Guillen (technical knockout), heavyweight “Bolo” Damian Wills beating “Inferno” Dante Craig (technical knockout), super featherweight “Baha” Bahodir Mamadjonov beating Rynell Griffin (unanimous decision), and light heavyweight “Knockout Man” Fedor Papazov beating John Willoughby (knockout).
