BOUNTIFUL— Before Jon Blunk died saving the life of Jansen Young, he often told her that she needed to be more cautious.

The only reason Blunk let Young stay alone in the student housing at the Bel-Rea Institute was because she has a big dog, she said.

The 21-year-old Farmington woman will never forget that advice.

On July 20, Blunk and Young attended the premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises,” in an Aurora, Colo. theater. Ten minutes into the film, a shooter with smoke bombs and assault rifles killed 12 people in that theater and injured many more.

“He was in the right hand corner of the theater,” she told the Clipper. “Then, it went boom and smoked all the way.”

The next thing Young remembers is Blunk pushing her down to protect her and explaining that there was a gunman in the theater.

When the panic was over, Young tried to get Blunt up so they could escape to safety, but he was unresponsive.

He had died protecting her.

“I ran out of the movie theater and I tried to find help,” she said. “There was a man in the parking lot who I didn’t recognize as a police officer, so I hid under the garbage can until I heard the scanners.

Since that awful night, Young has been inundated by requests for media interviews. She gave almost 30 within a week of the shooting.
