BOUNTIFUL – The Bountiful Braves wrestling team have set themselves up well for the remainder of the regular season.
With matches against region opponents Kearns and Highland remaining on their schedule, the Braves placed third in the 27-team Rockwell Rumble tournament, hosted at Bountiful High School last weekend.
The only two teams to best the Braves in their own tournament were region opponent Clearfield, which finished second, and State 5A contender Logan, which won the tournament with 200 points.
The Braves missed out on second place by a mere three points, scoring 168.5 points compared to Clearfield’s 171.5.
Woods Cross, at 82 points, placed ninth.
For Bountiful, six wrestlers each finished in the top three in their respective weight class.
Lamar Gimmeson, wrestling at 145 pounds, won his weight class by beating state contenders Logan Harrison of Logan High School in the semi-finals (a 14-7 decision) and Clearfield’s Ben Bolingbroke in the finals (12-5 decision).
Three other Bountiful wrestlers reached the championship match, but fell to their opponents and finished second in their weight class.
Jeff Adams, wrestling at 138 pounds, won a pair of decisions and pinned one opponent in order to reach the finals against Morgan’s Andrew Allen.
Allen won a very close match, 7-6, making Adams the second place finisher.
Preston Watton was another Brave to make the finals after beating Skyler Tucker of Box Elder and Coltin Merkley of Mountain Crest.
The championship match had Watton go up against Kolton Burgess of Clearfield, where Watton fell via 7-3 decision.
Lee Freestone, a 285-pounder for the Braves, also reached the finals, but ultimately lost to Dalton Mortensen of Granger when he was pinned in the second period.
Conner Arvidson and Sergio Rodriguez, wrestling at 132 and 160 pounds respectively, each finished third in their weight classes after winning their third place matches.
Both took a similar road to the third place match, losing in the semi-finals to fall to the lower bracket before winning their last two matches to claim third place.
For Woods Cross, Tyler Shepherd was the Wildcats top individual wrestler.
Shepherd placed third in the 182-pound bracket, and his only loss came to Jake Wylie of Logan in the semifinals.
Ben Harden and Bronc Marriott each finished fourth in the 113 and 126 pound weight classes, respectively, and Stone Mele finished fifth in the 132-pound bracket.
Sam Cottam, wrestling at 220 pounds, also finished on the podium. Cottam placed sixth overall, but had to forfeit his final three matches.
