BOUNTIFUL — Week 7 of high school football for south Davis County schools saw the Braves stay in the playoff Region 6 chase and the Vikings pick up their first win of the season.

It also saw a Darts’ team that gave up 41 points to Layton in a tough Region 1 loss, and a 14-point loss by the Woods Cross Wildcats, who dropped their second region game. 

Bountiful’s 35-0 shutout win over Clearfield Friday was the result of tough defense and a powerful offense. The Braves scored three rushing and two passing touchdowns.

Leading the passing game was Jordan Hayes, who threw for two touchdowns to Mosese Manu and Ryan Curtis. Hayes also completed 9-of-11 passes for 177 yards without an interception.

Jakob Hunt, Leka Nepote and Marshall Hawkes each rushed for a touchdown, and the defense picked up its first shutout of the season by holding the Falcons to fewer than 200 yards of total offense. Rylee Gautavai and Jeremy Rock led the defensive effort with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.

The Vikings’ victory over Taylorsville was the team’s best defensive effort of the season by far, as Viewmont allowed only a field goal in the 13-3 win over the Warriors.

In one of the lowest scoring games to date for south Davis high schools, the Vikings relied on kicker Aaron Dalton to get the majority of their points. Dalton kicked field goals of 38 and 42 yards and kicked an extra point to account for seven of the Vikings’ points.

Max Hadlock, the team’s fourth quarterback to start this season, threw a touchdown pass to Mitch Dalley in the second quarter that gave the Vikings enough points to get their first win. 

The Vikings defense held an opponent to fewer than 21 points for the second week in a row, allowing three points last Friday and 19 points to the Granger Lancers in a loss last week.

Davis’ game against Layton was a swing game for both teams as they each had 1-1 Region 1 records heading into Friday night’s action. Layton’s 27-point second quarter, however, gave the Lancers the lead for good. They beat the Darts 41-21 behind big plays from the offense, defense and special teams.

Davis’ initial spark in the game happened right at the kickoff, when Trevor Leavitt returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Davis was up 14-7 after causing a turnover in Layton territory, then scoring three plays later.

However, Layton stormed through the second quarter with four touchdowns in order to take a 34-14 halftime lead thanks to Willie Uasilaa, Hunter Evans and Tyler Fox. Uasilaa scampered in a rushing touchdown to make the score 14-13, then Layton recovered a short kickoff on the Darts’ 34 yard line. The recovery aided Layton to another touchdown, giving the Lancers the lead for good.

Before the half ended, a long field goal attempt came up short and was picked out of the air by Uasilaa, who returned the ball 90 yards for a touchdown.

Gage Cook threw for two touchdown passes, which went to Leavitt and Abel Porter.

Woods Cross’ tough loss to Highland was the team’s second region loss in three games after opening the season with a 4-0 preseason record. 

Even though the defense allowed just 14 points, the offense was completely shut down by the Rams’ defense.

The Rams held Woods Cross to fewer than 200 total yards of offense, forcing Skyler Farnes to throw two interceptions with 62 passing yards to his credit. Alton Brown was held to 57 yards rushing on 11 carries to lead the team.

Bountiful’s toughest test of the season will come this week as the Braves host the top-ranked East High Leopards Friday night. Viewmont will hit the road to take on West High School, and Davis will continue through Region 1 with a road game against the Weber Warriors.

Woods Cross will battle Clearfield on the road.
