STATE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER Kim Burningham believes school board candidate selection system is flawed.

BOUNTIFUL – After more than 15 years service as a Utah State Board Education member, Kim Burningham has decided not to run again.

Between the legislature and school board, the Bountiful resident has served more than 30 years.

“I’m 77. I think it’s time to do something else, time to take care of my wife,” Burningham said.

His wife, Susan, has multiple sclerosis.

“I’ve enjoyed my service very much,” he told The Clipper, emphasizing,“I’ll continue to be actively involved until the end of December.”

Burningham seems to a natural to serve on a school board. He was an educator for many years.

He taught speech, debate and drama at Bountiful High School for 27 years, and was also director of Bountiful High’s community education program.

He was chair of the state school board for six years. In 2005, he was national president of the National School Boards Association.

Burningham opposed the introduction school vouchers, and was a member of the executive committee of Utahns for Public Schools. That group sponsored a referendum to remove private school vouchers.

He was also the chair of Utahns for Ethical Government, a group that sponsored an initiative to establish clear ethical standards for the Utah State Legislature.

“We need to do a better job of supporting education in many ways,” Burningham said.

He said financial shortfalls are a major deficit, adding “there are many ways to support it (education), and many parents already do.

“We certainly need smaller class sizes, better support services, early childhood education,” he said.

“If we want to make the improvements, these are things we need desperately,” Burningham said.

He has received many awards over the years, ranging from Utah PTA Friend of Children Award to Gunn McKay Integrity in Government Award.
