CENTERVILLE — CenterPoint Legacy Theatre is resolving to shake things up a little next year.
After spending the last few years with “Madison Square Garden’s A Christmas Carol,” the theater company will be celebrating next December with “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.” They’ve also included “Into the Woods” for their 2013 season, a play that executive director Jansen Davis said the company has never done before.
“We’ve had a lot of feedback from our patrons looking for a bit more variety,” said Davis. “We’ve been looking at ‘White Christmas’ for two to three years, and we decided to try something new.”
“Into the Woods,” a Stephen Sondheim musical, offers a new look at several classic fairy tale characters. Various production companies throughout the state have performed it, and this year CenterPoint decided to give it a try.
“It’s got a great script and great music,” said Davis.
The upcoming season will also include several old favorites. It starts off with “Arsenic and Old Lace,” the play that served as the source material for the well-known 1941 Cary Grant movie. The play, the only non-musical in the upcoming season, opens Jan. 14.
Next up is “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” opening March 4. That will be followed by “The Secret Garden,” a musical opening April 22.
“It’s an opportunity for us to bring a variety of ages into the show,” said Davis.
The summer starts with “Fiddler on the Roof,” opening June 24.
“We try to have a certain number of classics that have stood the test of time,” said Davis.
“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” opens Aug. 19. “Into the Woods” will hit the stage Oct. 27, followed by “White Christmas” on Nov. 29.
“We try to balance out the season,” said Davis. “Variety is key.”
