1919-2012



C. Lee Berry, age 93, died of natural causes of age on Dec. 11. He kept up with the best of them, but just ran out of time.

He was born Oct. 1, 1919 in Salt Lake City to Charles Louis Berry, Jr. and Alta McLean Clifford Berry. The family moved to Long Beach, Calif. in 1923 where he attended elementary school. He graduated from Fairfax High School, Los Angeles in 1937.

Lee received an AB degree from the University of Southern California in 1942; an MA from California State University, Long Beach in 1953; and an EdD degree from Brigham Young University in1975. He received his teaching credentials from California State University, Los Angeles.

Lee held a reserve commission as second lieutenant, US Army Medical Administrative Corps from 1942-1945. He was discharged and enlisted in the Naval Reserve until being discharged in 1946.

On March 27, 1945 Lee married Alice Jane Grant (AJ Grant) in Los Angeles. They were later sealed as a family in the LDS Los Angeles Temple. After WWII they lived in Glendale, Burbank, and Hollywood, Calif. When Lee started his teaching career, they moved to Redondo Beach and then to Torrance, Calif. where they lived until their retirement in1980.

Lee worked for the Redondo Beach City School District for 30 years, serving as a teacher and audio-visual media director including school libraries. From 1960-65 he served as a master teacher in the teacher-training program for California State University, Long Beach. After receiving his doctorate Lee served as adjunct instructor for graduate students in school administration for California Lutheran College from 1975-1980.

At the time of his death Lee was survived by his wife, AJ, and four children: Steven Louis Berry, Alison Berry Allman, Kristin Berry Durrans and Brian Grant Berry. Lee was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Leslie Berry and Karen Berry; son, Bruce Clifford Berry; grandson, Connor Berry, and sister, Naomi Berry Whitaker.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at the LDS Chapel, 1885 Summerwood Drive, Farmington. A viewing for family and friends will be held at the church before the service at 12 noon.
