HEBER CITY - A 51-year-old Clinton man died when his pick-up truck collided head-on with a semi-truck near Strawberry Reservoir in Wasatch County Monday afternoon.
UHP troopers say snow and wind, causing white-out conditions may have contribute to the accident that killed Craig L Batchelor.
A small SUV was traveling slowly in the westbound lanes on the shoulder of the road with its hazard lights on, according to a UHP press release. The westbound semi-truck had slowed to approximately 20 mph because of the SUV in front of it and the weather conditions.
Troopers say that apparently the pick-up, driven by Batchelor, crossed double yellow lines into a westbound lane. Batchelor’s pick-up crashed into the semi that lost the left front tire and crossed into the eastbound lane, blocking traffic in both directions.
The pick-up rolled onto its side, pinning Batchelor who was not wearing a seatbelt. He died on scene. A male passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries.
The semi hit the SUV. Its driver, who was not identified, was taken to Heber Valley Medical Center. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
None of the crude oil the semi was hauling was spilled. SR 40 was closed for about four hours following the crash.
