BOUNTIFUL — Last year’s turnout for the annual Copper Cup Ice Skating Competition was one of the biggestin the history of the figure stating competition.

This year’s version of the Copper Cup kicks off Friday, July 12, inside the South Davis Recreation Center in Bountiful. Ice skaters from Davis County and beyond will converge to showcase their skills for an adoring public.

“This competition is the first of the skating season,” said Michelle Thomson of Utah Figure Skating, “and it gives skaters a chance to test their routines in front of an audience and judges prior to the upcoming competition season in this fall.”

This year’s schedule is similar to last year’s, starting with preliminary, pre-bronze and pre-silver events. The first afternoon will be filled with junior and senior short and free-dance routines, freeskating and adult preliminary dance routines for beginner, intermediate and advanced figure skaters.

Saturday morning will begin with the Snowplow Sam, a basic skill involving eight techniques. That will be followed by intermediate figure skaters and the day will later include additional rounds for beginner, intermediate and advanced skaters from across Davis County and beyond.

Saturday’s activities will end with synchronized groups, one of the toughest competitions throughout the weekend affair.
