FARMINGTON - a marathon involving voting machines is due to take place Friday.

The distance will be miniscule compared to the 26.2-mile variety, but it’ll involve hundreds of machines in a day-long effort, said County Elections Director Pat Beckstead.

The machines have been housed in the basement of the Farmington Library, which will be demolished next spring. They’ll be moved to new quarters on the second floor of the new County Administration Building.

“We’ve got close to 40 pallets packed and shrink-wrapped,” she said.

There will also be sets of shelving as well as 235 carts that hold about five voting machines each that will be moved, Beckstead said.

Two trucks and four men with On Trac moving company have been contracted to do the work for $825, assisted by county employees and jail inmates, she said.

That is the same firm that moves machines to the various voting locations.

The elections office is the first to make the move. It is already preparing for the Nov. 6 general election. Plans call for all departments, and the library, to be moved to the new building by early October.

“It’s really moving along rapidly” as far as completion of final touches on the new 90,000 square-foot building, said Planning Director Barry Burton, who has acted as the county’s project supervisor.
