BOUNTIFUL — Creating a Davis County chapter of the Boys & Girls Club is being seriously looked at by the Davis County Gala Committee.

The gala committee could boost such an effort by selecting the Boys & Girls Club as its charity recipient for the late summer 2013 Gala, County Commissioner Louenda Downs told the Clipper on Tuesday.

Layton is hoping to start its first Boys & Girls Club this fall, Downs said. It would be Davis County’s first, after many years of effort.

“I think by helping to establish a Boys and Girls Club in Davis County, it will  help all of the young people in the county. This gala (charity) effort may be more of a general effort” to stimulate Boys and Girls Clubs in the county, she said.

“We’re just exploring what the scope will be, how we can help as many kids as possible,” the commissioner said.

Bountiful Mayor Joe Johnson said he wasn’t aware of any formal discussions in his city or South Davis about a youth center or Boys & Girls Club, but believes the idea has merit.

“We’ve been doing some youth programs within our city,” Johnson said, referring to such programs as Bountiful Communities That Care.

That group is sponsored by the Bountiful Police Department. Its goal is to promote strong community involvement to overcome problems local youth may encounter, particularly underage drinking.

To that end, Bountiful Communities That Care holds parenting classes and started a summer academic program last summer at South Davis Junior High School.
