LAYTON – The Davis Arts Council is hoping to give your laughing muscles a workout.

The council is trying something new this summer by bringing the improv comedy group The Society to Ed Kenley Amphitheater on July 21. Featuring well-known local actor Kirby Heyborne, the group offers family friendly comedy that’s created live on-stage.

“This is different for us,” said DAC Executive Director Kirt Bateman, specifying that the council has never included improv comedy as part of its summer season. “But I know Kirby, and I know he’s hilarious, so we thought we’d give them a shot.”

Improv comedy is a style where none of the jokes are written out in advance, and the humor is often derived from audience suggestions. One of the performers will use the idea to get the ball rolling, and other performers will flesh out the scene live on-stage in a way designed to get as many laughs as possible.

The decision to include the group is part of Davis Arts Council’s goal of getting younger audiences into the amphitheater.

“Improv is loved by people in their late teens and early 20s,” said Bateman. “But I know our regular audience is also going to have a great time.”

Regulars to DAC shows also won’t have to worry about the kind of jokes they might be hearing.
