DAVIS COUNTY — With the season winding down to its final few games, all four of the south Davis County schools looked to locked up their positions in the 4A and 5A state boys’ basketball playoffs.

In the meantime, three of the four schools in action Friday night took home wins, with Davis taking a loss to Layton in a tough game.

At Layton, the Davis Darts suffered through their fourth region loss of the season, dropping to the Lancers 69-61. Davis pulled to within a 48-48 tie after the third quarter, but were outscored 21-13 in the fourth and went back to Davis with a loss.

Tyson Denney had a team-high 18 points for Davis, while teammate Jace Johnson scored 13 points in the loss.

Despite the loss, the Darts are still three games clear of Layton for the fourth and final seed out of Region 1, claiming a spot in the 5A state tournament.

At Kearns High School, the Viewmont Vikings continued to dominate through their Region 2 schedule, claiming their eighth region win and subsequently claiming the Region 2 crown.

In the Vikings’ 63-41 win, Jarom Tye and Haden Heath each scored in double figures (Tye had 21 points to Heath’s 13) while the defense held Kearns to just 19 first half points.

The Vikings still have a home game remaining Friday night against Taylorsville. The team’s final game before the playoffs will be against West on the road.

In Region 6, the Bountiful Braves guaranteed themselves a region crown after beating Cyprus 60-40 Friday night. Bountiful, who is 16-2 overall as of press time, had strong performances from Dain Murdock and Brock Yates to claim the win.

Bountiful’s defense has allowed a region-best 40 points per game on average, while also having the highest offensive totals in the region (scoring an average of 63 points per game) heading into the 4A playoffs.

The Woods Cross Wildcats had the toughest game of all the local schools Friday night, battling back and forth with Highland in a game that eventually went into overtime.

The Wildcats were able to maintain their No. 2 seed, however, as they outscored the Rams 10-8 in the overtime period to claim their fifth region win. Hayden Grant, Luke Jowers and Skyler Farnes each had a pivotal role on offense, scoring in double figures to help Woods Cross take home the win.

The Braves and Wildcats will battle Thursday night at Bountiful High School. Both will be in the 4A playoffs, with Bountiful going in as the No. 1 seed.

Woods Cross can be seeded anywhere from a No. 2 to a No. 4 seed, depending on how they finish the season.
