KAYSVILLE – The Davis Darts wrestling team was two matches away from winning its own tournament held just before the Thanksgiving holiday.
With the championship dual between the Darts and Mountain View Bruins tied at 27, Davis fell in its final two matches of the tournament to finish second overall in the Turkey Dart wrestling tournament held at Davis High School.
Region 6 schools Clearfield and Woods Cross finished the tournament third and fourth, respectively, after the Falcons beat the Wildcats in the third place match.
Both the Bruins and the Darts finished pool play with 3-0 records, leading to the championship match.
The Darts beat Corner Canyon, Woods Cross and Provo in order to reach the first place match. The Bruins had wins over Roy, Brighton and Clearfield in order to face the Darts.
In the championship match, Baylor Green, Wyatt Knowlton, Jeff McIlrath and Colby Barnes helped the Darts win four of the first five matches, but only led 12-6 due to all the wins coming via decision.
Wyatt Koelling’s pin over Josh Roberts (182 pounds) and Christian Smith’s 8-1 win over Jeff Kindrick (195 pounds) gave the Darts a 21-15 lead with five matches remaining, but pins at both the 220 pound and the 285 pound match gave the Bruins the lead with three matches to go.
Kade Evans, Davis’ 106-pound grappler, was able to pin Brigham Miyazarra in order to tie the match at 27, making the final two matches the most critical in the tournament.
In the 113-pound match, Julio Ortiz was able to pin Davis’ Cole Brklacich for the six point lead. In the 120-pound final, Gavin Cavalli of Mountain View pinned Parker Edgington in the third period to seal the victory for the Bruins.
Clearfield’s third place match over Woods Cross started with the Wildcats winning the first three matches.
Bronc Marriott, Stone Mele and Davis Halls each picked up wins over Andrew Paiz, Aaron Burt and Lance Gardiner.
Clearfield responded to the three losses by winning all but one of the remaining matches. Ben Harden of Woods Cross won a 6-4 decision over Dylan Arnold in the 113-pound match to claim the Wildcats lone win in the remaining matches.
Two of Clearfield’s matches, at 195 and 285 pounds, were won by forfeit.
Davis’ junior varsity team was also able to finish in second place, scoring 144 overall points. Mountain View finished first, scoring 183 points.
