WEST VALLEY CITY – The Davis Darts wrestling team accomplished the expectation set by coach Neal Porter, placing seventh out of 26 teams in the state 5A wrestling tournament at the Maverik Center last week.
The Vikings placed two spots behind Davis with 56.5 points.
In the 4A tournament, Bountiful finished in the top 15 for the third year in a row, placing 13th overall with 34 points.
Woods Cross finished 19th, scoring 20.5 points.
Darts seventh, Vikings ninth in state 5A wrestling
The Darts wrestling team had four wrestlers finish on the podium in last week’s state 5A wrestling tournament at the Maverik Center.
Davis was led by 182-pounder Wyatt Koelling, who won an individual title after beating Will Lang of West High School in the finals.
Jacob Naylor also wrestled in the 5A finals of the 145 pound division, but lost to Teague Vigil of Syracuse to finish second.
Kade Evans, at 106 pounds, placed third, and Connor Taylor placed sixth at 195 pounds.
Viewmont’s top placer was 120-pound wrestler Ryan Winger. Winger finished fourth after dropping the third place match to Colton Berger of Syracuse in a 5-4 decision.
Braves 13th, Wildcats 19th in state 4A wrestling
In the 4A state tournament, the Bountiful Braves were able to finish in the top 15 for the third year in a row, placing 13th overall.
The Wildcats were 19th.
Bountiful was led by Lee Freestone, the only grappler to place on the podium.
Freestone finished third after beating Damian Trujillo of Roy in a 5-1 decision in the third place match.
Cottom wasn’t able to wrestle the fifth place match due to injury, placing him sixth overall.
