Darts third, Vikings sixth in golf finals

RIVERTON — The Davis Darts and Viewmont Vikings finished third and sixth, respectively, after Tuesday’s final round of the 5A state golf championships held at Riverbend Golf Course.

Davis, which finished third, was led by Jake Godfrey’s two-day total of 147. After posting a 76 on Day 1, he finished with a 71 Tuesday. His two-day total was good enough to finish tied for 11th in the individual standings.

Four strokes behind Godfrey was teammate Greg Taylor, who shot 76-75 to finish with a 151. Dane Nelson shot matching 76’s and Jayden Nyman shot 76-82 to finish fifth on the team. 

Tim Mason’s 76-78 scores gave him a two-day total of 154 and were the final two scores that counted towards the team score. Davis’ first day total of 304 was followed by a second-day total of 300. The Darts’ 604 total was 20 strokes behind Brighton and Lone Peak, who finished 1-2 after a one-hole playoff to determine the state champion.

Mason Cook finished the team effort by shooting 79-84 for the tournament.

The Vikings’ sixth place finish as led by Kelton Hirsch, who followed a first-day 70 with a second-day 77 for a 147 total. Hirsch tied with Godfrey for 11th in individual scoring.

Boston Watts followed Hirsch and finished three strokes behind Hirsch with a 150 total (77-73). Caleb and Preston Summerhays shot 159 and 160, respectively, and McKay Johnson finished third on the team with a 156 total. 

Jayce Frampton rounded out the top six for Viewmont, shooting 81-84 during the tournament.

Fremont and Syracuse finished tied for fourth place with matching scores of 609 to round out the top five.

Results from Day 1 of the 4A golf finals, where Woods Cross is hoping to repeat as state champions, will be posted on the Davis Clipper’s website as soon as they become available.
