BOUNTIFUL — Davis High School’s football was the only local team to play a game on short rest, and it didn’t deter it from winning 23-12 over Cottonwood last Thursday.
At Bountiful, the Braves took a heavy loss at the hands of 2011 4A champion Logan. With a score of 35-14, the local team dropped its first game of the year. Viewmont also suffered a loss, its third to open the season, when it lost to Layton 37-6.
Woods Cross was the only South Davis County team to remain unbeaten, winning a close game over Mountain Crest with a score of 26-23.
Last Thursday, the Darts were faced with a short-resting period as they took the field against the Cottonwood Colts, but still managed to put together some key plays and timely drives in a 23-12 win.
Gage Cook again served as a centerpiece in the Darts offense, scoring two rushing touchdowns with 68 rushing yards. His 40-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave the Darts a 7-6 lead, while his second quarter touchdown run made the score 13-6 at halftime.
Chance Parker accounted for the team’s final touchdown of the night, recovering a fumble while scampering 95 yards for the touchdown. Andrew Fuller hit a short field goal in the fourth quarter and the Darts defense accounted for 11 sacks.
Bountiful’s two-game winning streak was on the line Friday night as the team hosted its second state champion in a row. Things did not go as planned for the Braves, however, as five turnovers turned into three Logan Grizzlies’ touchdowns in a 35-14 loss.
Four of the five turnovers were committed by Braves’ quarterback Jordan Hayes, who threw four interceptions in the game. The first three turned into touchdowns for Logan, which gave the Grizzlies a 28-14 lead after three quarters. Logan added another score before the game ended.
Hayes threw for one touchdown and Jakob Hunt had 87 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
Viewmont traveled to Layton High School, which was still searching for its first win. Instead, the Vikings ended up giving Layton its first win after the Lancers took down Viewmont 37-6.
Viewmont’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter when Jay Gibson found Aaron Dalton for an eight-yard touchdown pass that made the score 23-6.
Layton dominated the running game that night, rushing for 276 yards against the Vikings. Willie Uasilaa of Layton scored four touchdowns on 212 rushing yards to lead the team. Hunter Evans threw for 182 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in the win.
