BOUNTIFUL — The staff of the Davis Clipper and Utah Islander are looking forward to the Spelling Bee semi-finals for the south end of the county, and we are pleased for all the community support we have benefited from in the process.
The bee will be held tonight, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Bountiful High School.
Competing will be winners from south-end elementary schools that participated as well as home schoolers. Second- through sixth-graders were eligible. Winners have received invitations from their schools about the bee. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m.
The final Davis County Spelling Bee will take place at Woods Cross High School on March 21, 2013. Winners will be highlighted in the Davis Clipper and Utah Islander and online her or at Utahislander.com. All proceeds will go toward scholarships for winning spellers, who will also receive prizes contributed by the Bountiful Rotary Club.
The north-end semi-final spelling bee was held earlier this month at Layton High School, and 14 winners will progress to the final bee. There, they will compete against south-end winners and sixth, seventh and eighth graders who won their school bees. All contestants will compete together, regardless of grade level.
A photograph of south-end winners was published in the Feb. 14 edition of the Clipper on page 3 and will be in the Feb. 21 edition of the Utah Islander, and are connected to this post. Call 801-295-2251 to find out about ways to get your own copy.
Tomorrow, Wed., Feb. 20, look for a final study guide at davisclipper.com/spellingbee. You can also find guides and rules there for tonight's bee.
If you have questions or need more information, please contact the Clipper at 801-295-2251 ext. 126 or email rpalmer@davisclipper.com
The Davis Clipper/Utah Islander staff is particularly grateful for the hours of work undertaken by spelling bee volunteer organizers Sydney King and Kristin Kamerath, and volunteer pronouncer Barrie Giles, not to mention the panel of judges. We would also like to thank Rotary for its participation and Tracy Gunn, who has helped immensely with the registration process. This bee would not have been possible without their efforts.
