Local contests heat up north end

LAYTON — Voters in the county’s most populous city will face a field of four mayoral candidates when they go to the polls in next Tuesday’s primary election. 

Candidates looking to replace outgoing mayor Steve Curtis are Joyce Forbes Brown and Jory Francis, both city councilmembers, Bob Stevenson, who ran for the mayor’s office unsuccessfully in 2009, and Grace B. Stevenson.

City council candidates in Layton include incumbents Mike Bouwhuis and Barry T. Flitton; also Thomas (Tom) Day, Dawn Fitzpatrick, Joy Petro and Shelly Barber Reich. 

Alphabetically, here’s a listing of candidates running in other North Davis cities:

  • Clearfield has no mayoral primary but council candidates are: Ken Benson, Gary Bingham, Randy Goodnight, Ron Jones, Benjamin G. Larsen, David Tomczak and Bruce Young, an incumbent. 
  • Clinton has no mayoral primary but for council candidates are: Barbara J. Patterson, Michael Ray Petersen, Karen M. Peterson, Terrie C. Rees and Anthony O. “Tony” Thompson. 
  • South Weber has no mayoral primary. For council, candidates are Scott R. Casas, Ryan Stott, Janet Ukena, Marlene Poore and Dustin Petty, and incumbents Farrell D. Poll and Joseph E. Gertge.
  • Sunset has three candidates seeking the mayor’s slot including Kevin Snow, Ryan Furniss and Beverly K. Macfarlane. For council, those running are Raymond H. Chapman, Jr., Trystal Peay, Daniel Mathis, Chris R. Hadley, and incumbents Ricky Carlson and Brent Andrews. 
  • Syracuse has a mayoral runoff including Travis Jackson, Terry Palmer and Douglas Peterson. Running for council are Michael Gailey, Allen Lowry, Gary Pratt, Daniel Schuler and Randy Miller, and incumbent Brian Duncan.
  • West Point’s mayor is running unopposed. The council race includes Incumbents Andy Dawson and Kent Henderson, along with Brogan Fullmer, John Detamore and Eric Braegger.
