BOUNTIFUL – A dozen Utah local figure skaters helped sweep the podium at the regional championships, held recently.
Among those heading to November’s Sectionals, being held in Oakland, Calif., are locals Anna Sophia Rorrer-Warren, Amalia Friess, Mitchell Friess, and a slew of other figure skaters that are either from Davis County or train at the South Davis Recreation Center in Bountiful.
Rorrer-Warren placed first in the juvenile division, beating out Salt Lake Figure Skating Club’s Aurelia Perkins for the top spot.
Both, however, will head to the competition in California next month.
Also finishing on the podium was Amalia Friess, who finished third in the Intermediate Ladies competition and is from Davis County.
In the Novice Division, Daniella Dryden placed first and Rachel Crawford finished second. Both train at the recreation center, and Crawford skates for the Utah Figure Skating Club.
Mitchell Friess’ second place finish in the Novice Men’s earned him the opportunity to skate in California as well.
The success has brought home top honors in previous years as well. According to Michelle Thomson, Public and Media Relations person for Utah Figure Skating Club, eight Utahns made it to nationals last year.
Several of them came home with either gold, silver or bronze that year.
The sectionals competition will be held from Nov. 19-23 in Oakland. The top four in each category from that competition will complete in Boston, Mass., for the U.S. Figure Skating’s 100th National Championships.
Those eligible may be chosen for the U.S. Olympic team to compete in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
Information was made available by Thomson and the Utah Figure Skating Club.
The club will be performing a Spooktacular on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the recreation center.
