New faces in local primary contests

CENTERVILLE — With six candidates vying for two city council positions, Centerville City will hold primary elections on Aug. 13.

Neither Justin Allen nor Sherri Lindstrom, the councilmembers currently holding the positions, will seek reelection. Trying for the spots are Kevin Daly, Jack H. Dellastatious, Tami Fillmore, Gary Roland Goff, Stephanie Ivie and George McEwan.

Daly is vice president at Enerbank USA, which specializes in unsecured home improvement and home energy loans.

Jack H. Dellastatious served on the Centerville City Council from 2004-2008. Tami Fillmore has served on both the Centerville City Planning Commission and the Main Street Oversight Committee.

Gary Roland Goff is the chairman of the city’s parks and recreation committee, and has served on the committee for seven years. Stephanie Ivie has served as a county delegate and as part of Centerville’s CERT committee. George McEwan is a Gulf War veteran with a master’s degree in project management.

Though a mayoral primary won’t be held, residents will vote for a new mayor in November’s general election.

Former city council member Paul Cutler will run against current city councilmember Larry Wright for the position. Mayor Ron Russel is not seeking re-election.

The main issue facing candidates is the financial pressure of ongoing UTOPIA obligations for debt service. This was most recently seen in the city’s lack of funds for road improvements. City staff recommends increasing property tax to make up the gap, but the council did not approve such a decision.

Managing traffic flow on and around Parrish Lane also remains a concern.
