KAYSVILLE--The Davis High girls soccer program has a 57-3 record over the past three seasons as the three-time defending state champions, and the Darts haven’t lost a game since mid-October 2014. Despite losing six players to Division I programs, coach Soulyvanh (Souli) Phongsavath, who is in his 11th year with the Darts, expects other players to fill those voids in order to have another successful season.
“It remains to be seen how this group will do and we are looking for people to step up and challenging some of our girls to do that,” he said. “Every year, there is always a bit of pressure on the girls to match the year before with the high expectations we have in our program. This year is no different and I just hope they can meet those expectations.”
Senior captain Hailee Atwater, who will play for Utah Valley University next fall, along with senior captain Tabitha Howard, will be expected to lead the team on and off the field.
“Hailee is one of the most underrated players in the state who does a lot of our dirty work, and we’re hoping this year she can step in and be a star,” Souli said. “Tabitha was big for us last year in her first season on varsity and will be the anchor of our defense at the center back position.
Junior Zoe Jacobs, who has already committed to BYU, has been switched from outside back to a midfielder to be utilized more as an attacker for Davis. In the Dart’s first game Aug. 8 against Logan, Jacobs scored all four goals in a 4-3 win.
“She played really well,” Souli said. “Other players had scoring chances as well, but we couldn’t finish them so it was a tight game. I think the combination of the heat, our nerves and some conditioning were all factors in how the game went. I did think we played really well.”
Davis’ next games were against Snow Canyon and Dixie Aug. 15 and 16, after our press deadline. “It’s nice to have a few days off from games after our first one to work out some things and get some players healthy,” Souli said. “We definitely need to work on finishing.”
Also on the Darts team for 2017 are seniors Sami Bates, Olivia Griffin, Lex Hibler, Alexa Maple, Maddie McLeod, Kate McMaster, Halle Moffat, Abby Nielsen, Kassidy Webb and Riley Whitesides; juniors Kailee Anderson, Jade Kelley, Kirsten Marstella, Kaitlyn Pierce, Presley Rigby, Olivia Romney, Ashlyn Sanders and Haylee Thompson; sophomores Lily Becklin, Tayler Dunroe, Bentley Fuller, Annetta Frodsham, Izzy Hamblin, Camryn Hammond, Elizabeth Hoover, McCall Mattson, Reagan Nuenswander and Abigail Orison; freshmen Danielle Brower, Riley Gurney, Natalie Maire, Belle Mark and Ruth Wright.
Davis faces Layton, Fremont, Syracuse, Northridge, Weber and Clearfield in home-and-away Region 1 games beginning Aug. 22.
