The Davis High boys swimming team placed 11th in the recent 5A state swimming championships while the girls squad came in 15th.

“This is higher than last year and they should just keep getting better because we have a young team,” said head coach Kit Barker.

Elsa Mumford bested her school record in the 100 Breaststroke, swimming a 1:11.38 and finished eighth.

The Boys 400 Freestyle relay squad of Austin Halls, Andrew Simonsen, Nathan Skonnard and Tom Mi placed sixth while the 200 Free relay team of Halls, Max Deller, Mi and Simonsen came in seventh.

Other top finishers for the boys team at state were Mi (7th-100 Free, 12th-200 Free), Simonsen (8th-50 Free, 19th-100 Backstroke), Skonnard (12th-100 Butterfly, 15th-100 Free), Halls (13th-100 Free, 17th-200 Free), Deller (14th-50 Free), Zac Michaelson (14th-100 Breast) and Kyle Lortz (15th-200 Individual Medley, 19th-100 Breast)

For the girls squad, three relay teams placed in the top 15. The 200 medley relay lineup of Kira Halls, Mumford, Monica Mahoney and Whitney Carlson finished 11th with the 200 free relay team of Carlson, Mahoney, Olivia Smith and Jessica Barker coming in 15th place and the 400 free relay squad of Carlson, Halls, Barker and Smith finishing 12th.

Also placing on the girls team were Barker (17th-200 Free, 18th-500 Free) and Halls (19th-100 Back).

“The swimmers got even closer to those school records and should get more next year,” Barker said.

Barker said some highlights of the year were the boys team winning the Davis District Swim Meet by 150 points and the girls squad qualifying three relay teams for the state championship.

The second place Region 2 boys squad won 14 of 15 meets this season and had second place finishes at the Box Elder Invite and Cedar City Invitational and a fifth place showing at the Thanksgiving Invitational.

The girls team placed third at region and also had a second place finish at the Box Elder meet and third places at the Cedar City and District meets. They won 12 meets this season.

“Our main focus this year was on building each other up in and out of the pool,” Barker said. “Being positive and helping anyone who was struggling. I feel like it was a success and because of it we had stronger performances in swim meets and a better all-around experience for everyone. I feel that the team really came together with the help of the team captains and coaches.”
