OGDEN – The Davis County Independent Eagles hockey team has struggled recently, losing six straight before it entered Monday’s game against the Northern Utah Independent Panthers.

But instead of being able to bounce back and get a win, the Eagles fell for the seventh straight game. They lost to NUI 5-1 Monday night at the Ogden Ice Sheet.

Leading the scoring charge for NUI was Dante Sacco, who scored a pair of goals to put the game away for good. Before then, however, NUI built up a 3-1 lead after scoring three goals in the first period alone.

The Panthers scored the first three goals in the first period. A.J. Shirra, Dakota Fox and Jake Maero each scored a single goal to take a 3-0 lead with 3:41 remaining in the period.

Riley Jackson, the Panther’s forward, picked up pair of assists on the goals from Shirra and Fox. For Jackson, they were his seventh and eighth assists on the season to go along with six goals.

Maero’s goal was assisted by Kaden Robinson and Trevor Winesett, and had the Panthers in front for the remainder of the game.

DCI’s only goal came off the stick of Zan Hobbs, who picked up his fourth goal of the season. Kyle Swayne earned the assist, his second of the season, and had the Eagles within striking distance for a short time.

The first of Sacco’s goals was scored with only 45 seconds remaining in the second period, extending the Panthers’ lead to 4-1 heading into the final period. Maero and Chris Dewey earned the assists on the goal.

Sacco’s final goal occurred with just more than four minutes gone in the third period. Fox and Zach Bolton assisted.

For DCI, Hobbs knocked in his fourth goal of the season and now leads the team with eight points in eight games on the year. He leads the team in both goals scored and assists this season.

Swayne picked up his second assist on the year and is second on the team with six points on the season. He is tied with Hobbs and Skylour Tatum for the team lead in goals scored.

The loss was DCI’s seventh straight after opening the 2012 campaign with a 4-2 win over Northridge. Since then, they have been outscored 47-17 and have lost by three or more goals in six of the last seven games.

DCI’s next game will be against Murray on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the County Ice Center in Murray. Face off is at 7:45 p.m. The Eagle’s final home game will be against Skyline on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the South Davis Recreation Center.
