That one goal for Davis came when fans were still filing into the stadium, as the Darts took down the Grizzlies with a second-minute goal to advance to the state 5A finals against the Brighton Bengals.
“I don’t think we could have made it any harder on ourselves,” said Davis coach Souli Phongsavath. “The lack of finishing, loss of some composure ... it would have been easier if we could have taken advantage of the three or four really good opportunities, then this game would have been a lot easier on us. But I’m glad that they never quit.”
The only goal of the game came with just over two minutes gone in the first half when Mitch Parkinson scored off a John Parker assist. On the goal, Davis’ first shot attempt bounced off the Copper Hills goal keeper and deflected back into play on the far side of the field. With the net open and the deflection falling to John Taylor’s feet, Taylor crossed the ball over to Parkinson, who kicked in his 11th goal of the season.
