CENTERVILLE – Kathie Bone, a member of the Davis School Board, was honored for planting the seeds of confidence in the women and girls she has worked with, and for encouraging them to excel.

Bone was presented the Ruby Award by Soroptimists International of Bountiful at their recent tea to celebrate International Women’s Day.

For 18 years, Bone taught first, second or third grades. For 14 more she was a principal, first at Whitesides and then at Windridge.

She lead the Davis Education Association for two years, and then for another seven years, was director of elementary schools for the district. She was elected to the school board in 2012.

“There are many teachers and school leaders across the state who trace their initial encouragement to Kathie,” Carolyn Roberts, administrative assistant to the Bryan Bowles, district superintendent, was quoted as saying. “She is a master at planting seeds of confidence, opening doors for women who are considering teaching, adminstration or other positions that require experience and additional.”

In accepting the award, Bone said she comes from a long line of very strong women, including a grandmother and a mother who started out teaching school.

“The most powerful kind of teaching is by example,” she said.
